    SIBO Test

    Get Quote

You've been bloated for months. Your scopes came back clear. Your stool tests showed nothing. You've been told it's IBS and sent home with a dietary handout. But the bloating, the pain, the unpredictable bowels keep coming back. The problem might not be in your large intestine at all. It could be happening higher up, in your small intestine, where bacteria simply do not belong in large numbers.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, or SIBO, is one of the most under-diagnosed root causes of persistent digestive symptoms. It occurs when bacteria migrate into the small intestine and start fermenting undigested food, producing excess gas and interfering with nutrient absorption. The SIBO Breath Test is the standard non-invasive method for diagnosing this condition, and at NutraNourish, Dr Menka Gupta personally translates the results into a personalised, root-cause healing plan.

    Understanding the Test Types

Not all SIBO is the same, and not all breath tests detect the same type. There are three breath test variants depending on your symptom profile:

    • Glucose Breath Test: best for detecting bacterial overgrowth in the upper part of the small intestine. Glucose is absorbed quickly, so any gas rise within 90 minutes points to activity in the proximal section.
    • Lactulose Breath Test: covers the full length of the small intestine. Because lactulose is not absorbed, it travels further and can detect more distal overgrowth. Slightly broader coverage than the glucose test.
    • Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) Test: identifies sulphide-producing bacteria that standard hydrogen and methane testing misses entirely. Particularly relevant for people with diarrhoea-dominant symptoms or those who have tested negative for SIBO despite ongoing symptoms. We are able to arrange an H2S test, in case you travel to the US

In many cases, combining substrates gives the most complete diagnostic picture. Dr Menka recommends the right combination based on your specific symptom pattern.

    What The Test Reveals

    Your report covers:

    • Whether SIBO is present, based on gas levels rising above diagnostic thresholds during the test window
    • The type of SIBO you have, whether hydrogen-dominant, methane-dominant (also called Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth or IMO), or H2S-dominant
    • The location of overgrowth within the small intestine, based on when during the test, gas levels rise
    • The severity of overgrowth is based on how high and how early gas levels increase
    • How your gas pattern connects to your specific symptom profile

These findings are then used by Dr Menka Gupta to build a targeted antimicrobial protocol, nutritional strategy, motility support plan, and supplement program matched specifically to your SIBO type.

    Who Should Do This Test

This test is worth considering if you are dealing with any of the following:

    • Persistent bloating, especially after meals
    • Abdominal pain, cramping, or distension
    • Diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating between both
    • Excessive gas or burping
    • Fatty or foul-smelling stools
    • An IBS diagnosis that has not responded to standard treatments
    • Unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or low mood
    • Skin rashes, eczema, or other inflammatory skin conditions
    • Suspected B12 or fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies despite a clean diet
    • Symptoms that worsen with high-FODMAP or high-carbohydrate meals
    • Post-infectious gut dysfunction following a stomach bug or food poisoning
    • Conditions involving slow gut motility, such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, or use of long-term PPIs or opioids

    Preparation Guidelines

Accurate results depend heavily on preparation. The key steps are: stop probiotics two weeks before the test; review all medications with your doctor one to four weeks prior; follow a restricted diet for 24 hours before (plain proteins, white rice, clear broth, and water only.  Fast completely for 12 hours before the test (water only); and avoid smoking, gum, and mouthwash in the hour before. Results are typically ready within 1 to 4 weeks of the lab receiving your samples.
