The Oral Microbiome Test is a functional assessment used to evaluate the microbial environment of the mouth and its relationship to both oral and systemic health.

The oral cavity contains a complex ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that play a significant role in dental health, immune function, and overall wellbeing. When microbial balance in the mouth is disrupted, it can contribute not only to local issues such as gum disease and tooth decay, but also to systemic conditions affecting the cardiovascular system, respiratory tract, and beyond.

Testing is used to identify specific microbial imbalances in the oral cavity and provide a basis for targeted interventions through dietary, lifestyle, and therapeutic approaches.

    What The Test Evaluates

The Oral Microbiome Test assesses 21 markers across the following categories:

    Periodontal and pathogenic bacteria:

    • Campylobacter rectus
    • Capnocytophaga gingivalis
    • Enterococcus faecalis
    • Fusobacterium nucleatum
    • Parvimonas micra
    • Peptostreptococcus anaerobius
    • Prevotella intermedia
    • Streptococcus mutans
    • Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans
    • Porphyromonas gingivalis
    • Tannerella forsythia
    • Treponema denticola

    Opportunistic and resistant organisms:

    • Staphylococcus aureus
    • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
    • Acinetobacter species
    • Haemophilus species

    Fungal markers:

    • Candida albicans
    • Candida species

    Commensal and beneficial organisms:

    • Streptococcus salivarius
    • Lactobacillus species

    Environmental marker:

    • Oral pH levels

    How The Test Works

The test is carried out using oral saliva and swab specimens collected at home using the provided kit. Samples are analysed using two complementary technologies:

    • PCR (polymerase chain reaction): detects and quantifies microbial DNA directly from the sample, providing precise identification of oral organisms
    • MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry: supports rapid and accurate identification of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance markers

Results are available within 14 business days of the laboratory receiving the sample.

    Who This Test Is For

This test is used for individuals presenting with or concerned about:

    • Gum disease, periodontal issues, or persistent gum inflammation
    • Tooth decay or recurring dental infections
    • Chronic bad breath not resolved by standard oral hygiene
    • Oral fungal infections or suspected Candida overgrowth
    • Systemic conditions with a known oral microbiome connection, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or autoimmune conditions
    • A history of antibiotic use affecting oral flora
    • Proactive assessment of oral microbial health as part of a broader functional medicine evaluation

    What The Service Includes

    • Oral Microbiome Test analysing 21 markers via PCR and MALDI-TOF technology
    • At-home collection kit using oral saliva and swab specimens
    • Laboratory analysis with results available within 14 business days
    • Assessment report detailing microbial findings across pathogenic, opportunistic, commensal, and fungal categories
    • Oral pH measurement included as part of the panel
    • Results reviewed and interpreted by Dr Menka Gupta within the context of your clinical presentation and health history

    Preparation Guidelines

Preparation involves following the pre-test collection instructions provided with the kit. To ensure accurate results, avoid eating, drinking, brushing teeth, using mouthwash, or applying any oral products for the period specified in your collection instructions prior to sample collection.
