The Omega-3 Deficiency Test is a functional assessment used to evaluate the fatty acid composition of the blood, with a focus on omega-3 status and its relationship to cardiovascular health, inflammation, brain function, and overall cellular health.
Omega-3 fatty acids — particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) — are essential components of cell membranes throughout the body. They cannot be produced in sufficient quantities by the body alone and must come from diet or supplementation. Suboptimal omega-3 levels are widespread and have been associated with increased cardiovascular risk, chronic inflammation, cognitive decline, and hormonal imbalance.
Testing measures fatty acid levels directly from red blood cell membranes, which reflect longer-term dietary intake and metabolism more accurately than plasma testing. Results are used to identify deficiencies, assess inflammatory fatty acid ratios, and guide targeted nutritional protocols.
What The Test Evaluates
The Omega-3 Deficiency Test measures 24 individual fatty acids across the following categories:
Omega-3 fatty acids:
Omega-6 fatty acids:
Key ratios:
Trans fat assessment:
Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids:
How The Test Works
The test is carried out using a small finger-prick blood spot sample collected at home using the provided kit. The dried blood spot is then sent to the certified laboratory for analysis using a validated and standardised methodology used in over 200 published research studies.
Results are delivered within 2–4 weeks of the laboratory receiving the sample and include a personalised report with reference ranges and individual fatty acid levels.
Who This Test Is For
This test is used for individuals presenting with or concerned about:
The Omega-3 Index is considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in its own right. A desirable Omega-3 Index is 8% or above; levels below 4% are associated with significantly increased risk.
What The Service Includes
Preparation Guidelines
No fasting is required prior to sample collection. Follow the collection instructions provided with the kit. For most accurate results, collect the sample before taking any omega-3 supplements on the day of testing, and ensure hands are warm to facilitate an adequate blood spot sample.
