The Hair Toxic Element Exposure Profile is a functional assessment used to evaluate recent and ongoing exposure to a comprehensive range of toxic heavy metals, using hair as the specimen of choice for detecting cumulative environmental and dietary metal burden.
Hair is primarily an excretory tissue. As protein is synthesised in the hair follicle, elements are permanently incorporated into the hair shaft, creating a reliable, time-averaged record of metal exposure over months rather than hours. Toxic elements can be 200 to 300 times more concentrated in hair than in blood or urine, making hair the most sensitive specimen for detecting exposure to metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, and aluminium — metals that may not be detectable at significant levels in a standard blood test taken at a single point in time.
This profile is validated by a CLIA-licensed laboratory with over five decades of specialisation in elemental testing, and has been recognised by both the US Environmental Protection Agency and the CDC as a reliable method for assessing toxic metal exposure when performed under controlled analytical conditions.
What The Test Evaluates
The Hair Toxic Element Exposure Profile measures 31 toxic and essential element markers from a single hair sample:
Toxic heavy metals:
Essential elements also assessed:
Each element is measured against validated reference ranges, and results are interpreted in the context of the individual's clinical presentation, exposure history, and symptom profile.
How The Test Works
The test requires a small hair sample — 0.25 grams — collected from the nape of the neck using scissors. The sample is then sent to the certified laboratory for analysis using advanced instrumentation. Results are typically available within 2 to 4 business days of the laboratory receiving the sample.
No blood draw or urine collection is required. The test is entirely non-invasive.
Who This Test Is For
This test is used for individuals presenting with or concerned about:
Chronic low-level metal exposure often goes undetected in standard medical investigations. Symptoms are frequently diffuse, attributed to lifestyle or ageing, and do not point clearly to a toxic cause without targeted testing.
What The Service Includes
Preparation Guidelines
The hair sample should be collected from the nape of the neck, cut as close to the scalp as possible to reflect the most recent period of exposure. Before collection, avoid using shampoos, bleaches, dyes, or chemical treatments where possible, as these can introduce external contamination that may affect accuracy. Follow the full collection instructions provided with the kit.
